Green Peas Masala Recipe /kerala-matar-masala /Peas-masala
Cooking various vegetarian dishes each day is something of an arduous task for me.  Today I am presenting Kerala Style Green Peas Curry / Masala. This is my second recipe which comes under the tag, ‘Green Peas’..  The first one was, Matar Paneer.

This recipe has been given to me by my colleague Preethi two years back. Now only I was able to post it. She is from Palakkad, and what she told me was that this is the way people from Palakkad make this curry. Each district of Kerala has at least one special dish to call exclusively their own.

When I started to write something on this, the very first thing that came to my mind is my stay in St. Mary’s Residential School Hostel, Thiruvalla, Kerala, where we used to have this Peas Masala on Sundays. After the morning Sunday Mass in the church, all of us would be so hungry and you can imagine the hunger and the way we finish Palappam or Appam and this Green Peas Curry. The colour and texture of this curry was the same that I had it years back from the school hostel.

We (my parental home) never used to even buy Dry Green Peas, (don’t know exactly the reason). I really want to ask my mom the reason. Otherwise I am planning to make it myself both Appam and Green Peas Masala for my parents in order to motivate her to include this item in their kitchen menu.

Have you tried, Gajar ka Halwa / Carrot Halwa?

Now let us see the Ingredients and procedure of doing Matar Masala.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4
Calories: 110 / serving

Ingredients for Green Peas Masala:

Green Peas (dried) – 1 cup
Onion Big – 1
Green Chilli – 3 medium
Garlic pods – 2
Tomato – 1 medium size
Grated Coconut – 1 cup
Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp.
Turmeric Powder – 1 tsp.
Coconut Oil – 1 tbsp.
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp.
Shallots – 2
Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
How to Make Matar Masala:

Wash and soak dry Green Peas overnight or for about 6 to 8 hours. Drain it and pressure cook it with Onion, Tomatoes, Green Chilli and Salt, till it is done. Keep aside.
By this time Grind grated Coconut, Cumin Seeds, Turmeric Powder and Garlic to a smooth paste. Add this to the cooked Green Peas.

Heat Coconut Oil in a deep pan. Splutter Mustard Seeds. Next add the chopped Onion / Shallots and sauté it till it gets golden brown in colour. Add few Curry Leaves too. Add the cooked Green Peas, Onion, Tomato and Green Chilli mix along with its stock. Cover and cook for three to four minutes. Once it starts boiling, reduce the flame to low and add the Coconut paste. Mix well. At this time check the consistency of the curry and add little water if you want it like that. Check the salt and add if required. Let it cook till you see few bubbles starts appearing on top. Turn off the flame.

Kerala Style Green Peas Masala is now ready for serving along with Palappam or Appam, Vellayappam or Kallappam, Kerala Style Idiyappam, Chappathi etc.

My Recipe Notes on Peas Masala Kerala Style:

1. You can use Vegetable oil instead of Coconut Oil.

2. You can use the same recipe for the frozen green peas or for the raw green peas. In that case no need to soak it.

3. Add the required amount of peas stock / water while making curry itself, because this curry tends to thicken once it cools down. But I didn`t add much, as we like the dish this way..

Serve Green Peas Curry to your loved ones..

Happy Cooking,

Cheers,
