Today I am presenting a quick and easy dish, Potato Gratin, though Turkey is the most common food served during the Thanksgiving Dinner. Because of this reason, Thanksgiving Day is also called as the ‘Turkey Day’. But Potato is a common meal of this day. They use non-traditional ones like Steak or Sushi too. The other common meals are various casseroles and veggies.

Gratin is a part of the French cuisine. It is usually baked in a shallow pan to form a golden crust on top and is traditionally served in its baking dish itself.

Thanksgiving is a national day celebrated mostly in US and Canada. Every year the dates varies. This days’ origin is related to harvest festival, a day of giving thanks for the harvest of that particular year and of the preceding year. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in US and other places, and second Monday of October in Canada. In US, people give thanks to the Almighty God for all the blessings they have achieved in the year and for their bountiful autumn harvest. It is a day off to the workers in America. Families and friends meet together to share their blessings and gifts. They offer prayers to God for His grace and blessings.

I too got chances to celebrate it in my workplace, in my school, Jewels International School of Kinshasa, where we had a large community of International students and teachers. It is a day teachers really love to enjoy from the hectic schedule of teaching. I love this day as on this day most of us start Christmas shopping. So we can say that Thanksgiving Day is a day to celebrate both Thanksgiving and Christmas mixed together.

This dish is a perfect creamy and just the right blend of flavours. Definitely it’s a comfort food dish.

Here goes the recipe of Potato Gratin…

Servings – 12

Ingredients for French Potato Gratin:

Potato – 1 kg
Onion – 1 thinly sliced into rings
Whole Milk – 1 cup
Heavy Cream – ¾ cup
Parmesan Cheese – ¼ cup
Melted Butter – to grease
Garlic – 2, minced
Bay Leaf – 1
Thyme powder – 2 pinches
Nutmeg powder – ¼ tsp. (freshly grated)
Black Pepper Powder – to taste
Salt – to taste.

How to Make Cheesy Potato Gratin:

Preheat the oven to 400 degree F.

Wash and peel the Potatoes and cut them into ½ inch slices. Take a pan and heat up the Cream. Put the sliced potatoes in to it. Add Milk, Onion, Minced Garlic, Bay leaf, Nutmeg powder, Thyme powder, Pepper Powder and Salt to it. Simmer it until tender.

Grease your baking pan with little butter. Remove the Bay Leaf with a slotted spoon. Pour the sludgy Milk and Potato mixture into it. Level out the potatoes for uniform cooking time. Spread the Parmesan Cheese over the Potato mix. Season the mix with little bit of salt and pepper powder. Cover the dish with aluminium foil, but pull back one corner for the steam to escape. Place dish on a baking tray. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until potato is bubbly and the top layer is browned. Remove it from the oven, let stand for 10 to 20 minutes before slicing and serving.

My Recipe Notes on Onion Potato Gratin:

1. Six to eight medium sized potatoes would make 1 kg.
2. You can even use white pepper powder.
3. You can use even coarsely grated Cheddar cheese.
3. Make sure not to overcook Potatoes while boiling in Milk. It should not dissolve into mush.
4. This dish tastes better on the second day.
5. You can make this dish the night before and just re heat it for a Christmas Day breakfast. The taste improves upon re heating the following day.

Wishing you the gift of faith and the blessing of hope this thanksgiving day!

Happy Baking.. Cheers.. Seena.
