Good Morning / Good Afternoon / Good Evening guys..

My dear friends, first of all wishing you and your family a very Happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year. May God fulfil all your wishes, give you good health, peace, prosperity and happiness all throughout your life..

Of all the festivals of India, Diwali is the most accepted one!! It is the festival of lights, crackers, mehendi, sweets for the Indians.. I always love to light and see those diyas, though I didn’t get an opportunity to do it myself. Let this Diwali break your ego and not crackers.. These words I am used to see on all social media during the time of Diwali!! It is a festival people celebrate irrespective of caste, creed or religion..

Ladies of all households begin to start preparations days ahead, what sweets to prepare, applying henna, etc., I remember my childhood days well, how we celebrated Diwali. We were in Chennai and the Diwali celebration starts one week prior to the Diwali date. Day and night we could hear the sounds of crackers, and atmosphere was filled with the same sound especially during the evenings and it used to go  on for whole nights..

I remember our court yards filled with the left overs of crackers and our maid found it difficult to clean the courtyards when she come home the next day morning!! My mom used to make all kinds of sweets of her knowledge to celebrate the event and shared those with our all neighbours.

Another important ritual of Diwali is giving gifts as a token of love and affection to ones’ dear ones. I think people compete to give the best gifts.. Diwali divas are one of the gift items people exchange on these days.. Now a day’s people buy online gifts to send to their loved ones living far away.  Also we can see these days that it is an occasion to please business customers and other contacts!! Traffic in big cities like Mumbai and Delhi must be at snail‘s pace.

Today I am presenting before you is chocolate burfi, a simple and easy recipe anyone can make to celebrate Diwali. My husband love to have anything with chocolate, whether it is cake, fudge, cookies, nuts, brownies, muffins or his favourite chocolate ice cream.. His list is endless.. I decided to add chocolate in this to make him happy..   When I was making this sweet burfi, the thought came to my mind was, it’s almost the same way I made Milk Peda too.

Check out my one another sweet dish, Milk Peda / Dhoodh Peda which became a super duper hit!! It is an apt and easy sweet dish to make it for Diwali!! I am sure all kids love to have this. I made chocolate burfi in two layers. The bottom layer is plain and the top layer is chocolate flavoured. When tasted it, we got a feeling that it’s just like the store bought burfies.. You can make this homemade burfi sweet for any celebration..

This is the first time I have tried with silver leaves or chandi waraq!! Since I was not that experienced in how to place these silver leaves on food, it was a time consuming work. Now I am a bit confident in doing it and learned the tricks too..   I made Kaju burfi too for this Diwali to post on my blog and garnished it with silver leaves, but due to lack of time, it´s better to post it later.

One more burfi recipe is there in this blog. It is Kaju Burfi / Cashew Nut Fudge. If u missed the Sweet Recipes of this blog, you can Click Here..

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Serves: 15

Ingredients for Chocolate Burfi:

Milk Powder – 3 cups (divided)
Sugar Powder – 1 cup (divided)
Ghee – 3 tbsp. (divided) + ¼ tsp. to grease the pan.
Milk – ½ cup (divided)
Cardamom drops – ¼ tsp.
Unsweetened cocoa powder – 3 tbsp.

For garnishing Chocolate Burfi:

Edible silver leaves / chandi waraq or chopped cashew nuts or almonds.

How to Make Chocolate Fudge:

Grease an oven proof pan with butter or ghee or place a butter paper and keep it aside.

Heat a non-stick pan and heat ½ tsp. ghee. Add the milk powder and sauté it for 2 minutes. Transfer this to a bowl.

In the same pan, add 1 tbsp. ghee. And heat it. Add Milk to it and Stir it. Add 1 ½ cups of milk powder and mix it well till everything gets incorporated well. Add ½ cup of Sugar powder and mix well and continue to cook on low flame. Add Cardamom drops and again stir it well. Pour this mixture to the greased pan and spread it evenly with a spatula.

In the same pan, add again ½ tsp. ghee and follow the steps 2 and 7 with the remaining portion of milk powder and sugar powder. Brush little ghee on the top. Now add the cocoa powder and mix it well. It should not get burned. Pour the entire mixture evenly on the top of white layer. Place the edible silver leaves very carefully over the burfi. Press it lightly everywhere. Give enough time to get it cool. After the burfi is set, keep it in the freezer for ten or fifteen minutes.

After it sets, cut it to squares or diamond shapes or your desired shapes. Remove them gently from the pan. Chocolate Burfi is ready to be served.

My Recipe Notes and Tips on Chocolate Burfi:

1. You can use unsalted butter instead of ghee.
2. The cocoa powder should not be cooked for so long, if so, it makes the burfies bitter.
3. Burfies always has to be cooked on low flame or else the colour gets changed if it gets burned.
4. Adding more sugar powder will release moisture a lot and so you have to cook it for more time, which results in changing the colour of burfi. The burfi mixture also will get sticky. So, be careful. You can increase a bit more of sugar powder. After tasting it my husband told me that, “it would have been better if you have added little more sugar”..
5. The quantity of cocoa powder also is your personal choice.
6. Keep Chocolate Burfi in airtight containers. You can keep it in the room temperature for 2 days or can keep in the fridge for a week.
