Bhajis are similar to fritters. They are one of the easy to make yummy snacks. We make it in the evenings and also we get to see these bread bhajis in Indian streets, on roadsides, exhibitions, on beach sides, restaurants etc. It is very famous as street food in South India. We can see long queues on roads to buy this Bread Bhaji. You can have it as snack or appetizer or as a starter before the main course. You can eat it alone also without any accompaniments.. During the monsoon and rainy seasons, bhajis serve as a comfort food. You may have interest in Chilli Bhaji also.

Bhajis are an inevitable dish of Maharashtrians. We can see many kinds of bhajis not only in Kerala, but also in some other Indian states like, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It is generally served with a hot cup of coffee or tea. In Northern Part of India, bhajis are called Pakodas, hence Bread Bhaji is called as Braed Pakodas.

My husband, Reji loves all kinds of bhaji. He loves little hot and spicy snacks. My impression on this snack got totally changed once I had this for the first time some years back. I love to have any bhajis with a hot cup of tea. Bread Bhaji is soft in the middle and crispy outside.

Make the batter with Gram Flour / besan flour / chick pea flour and rice flour, and then dip breads in this flour mixture, deep fry in hot oil. You can make many bjhjis, especially Onion, potato or plantain Bhajis or chilli bahajis by using the same batter.

I prepare this Bread Bhaji several times as it is so easy one. This time too it came out irresistibly tasty.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Serves: 3

Ingredients for Bread Bhaji:

Bread Slices – 8
Besan flour – 1 ½ cup
Rice Flour – 2 tbsp.
Red Chilli Powder – 1 tsp.
Cumin Seeds Powder – 2 pinches
Asafoetida Powder – 1 pinch
Homemade Garam Masala Powder – 2 pinches
Baking soda – a pinch
Coriander chopped – one fist full
Oil – for deep frying
Salt – to taste
Water – to make the batter

How to Make Bread Pakora:

Slice the bread and then cut each into 2 equal portions. Keep it aside. Sift the besan flour into a bowl. Take all equipments required to make Bread Bhajis. Arrange a kitchen tissue on a plate.

Take a bowl and add all ingredients except water and mix it with a spoon. Add water little by little and whisk it well till you get the right consistency. The batter should be thick and flowing. It should be not too thick or too watery.

Heat enough oil in a wide pan on medium high to deep fry. Drop a pinch of batter into the oil. If the drop fluffs up and floats, then the oil is hot enough to start making bhajis. Now reduce the flame to medium low.

Take one bread slice and dip in the bhaji batter to coat well on all sides. Slide these well coated breads immediately into the hot oil. Let it cook till the frying noise stops. Now flip it and fry the other side too. Deep fry them till you get golden colour bread bhajis. When it is done, remove it with tongs to a kitchen towel to drain out the excess oil. Continue the process with the rest of the breads.

Delicious and tempting Bread Bhajis are ready. Serve bhajis with ketch up, coriander chutney and with a hot cup of tea / coffee.

My Recipe Notes on Bread Pakora Recipe:

1. I have used regular bread. Milk Bread also goes well for making this. You can cut the breads slices crosswise like a triangle.
2. You should be very careful while you make batter for making Bread Bhaji. It should not be too thin or not too thick.
3. Adding rice flour or semolina will make bhajis little crisp.
4. You can adjust the spiciness to suit your taste buds and liking.
5. The oil should be hot enough to make these Bread Bhajis, otherwise bhajis will absorb more oil. As I have mentioned earlier, to test the temperature of oil, put one or two drops of batter into the oil. If it pops up immediately to the surface of the oil, it’s the right temperature to make Bread Bhajis.
6. Keep the flame always on low medium.
7. You can add carom seeds if you prefer its taste.

Happy cooking..

Cheers..

Seena.
