Broccoli Besan Stir Fry Subji Recipe

Broccoli, my first recipe with Broccoli for my blog. Indians hardly use this vegetable, broccoli. But when we look at all the benefits it gives to our body, how can we avoid using it and bring it to our life? Once you start making it, you will tend to buy it frequently. Broccoli Stir Fry is a healthy side dish, which goes well with roti and chapatti. It is a great vegetable for making healthy vegetarian side dishes and is ready in a flash.





Broccoli is having so many health benefits. It purifies the liver and spleen. It lowers cholesterol level, Include Broccoli in your diet for getting a healthy body. It helps us to solve the Vitamin D deficiency.

They come up with big stalks just like Cauliflower. Cut the ends of these stalks and wash it in cold water, keep it aside for some time to get it dry. Now it is ready to use.


This humble Indian side dish for Chapati and roti is flavoured with some spices and coated with chick pea flour / Besan Flour.

So once you make this dish, you will get a feeling that without frying it in oil, you get some Broccoli Pakodas or Brocoli Pakoras!! I am sure that you gonna try it out and your kids too will love it. Moms also will be happy once they start eating Broccoli!! 


So here goes the recipe of Broccoli Besan Sabji Recipe..

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients for Broccoli Stir Fry:

Broccoli – 350 grams
Garlic, finely chopped – 3
Chick Pea Flour / Besan Flour – ½ cup
Vegetable Oil – 2 tbsp.
Asafetida / Hing – 1 pinch
Green Chillies, slit – 2 small
Cumin Powder – ½ tsp.
Coriander Powder – ½ tbsp..
Dry Mango Powder / Amchur Powder – ½ tsp.
Garam Masala Powder – ½ tsp.
Salt – to taste
Lemon Juice – 1 tsp.

How to Make Broccoli Stir Fry:

Wash Broccoli (refer My Recipe Notes given) in enough water and cut into nice bite size florets. Leave it for some time, so that excess water dries up.

Take chick pea flour and roast it for few minutes or till you get a nice aroma. Transfer it to a bowl. Add in all spices including, dry mango powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, and salt and give it a mix. You will feel lumps. Just break it between your fingers. Add I tbsp. of oil and mix it again well with your fingers.

Heat oil in pan on medium heat. Add the asafoetida powder. Add chopped garlic and slit green chillies. Cook it for about few seconds. Add in the broccoli florets. Mix it well, so the whole oil get coated with broccoli florets. Sauté it for 3 or 4 minutes. Add little salt and sauté it again.
Now sprinkle chick pea flour on the top of broccoli, so that all these florets get a little bit of besan. Without mixing, cover it with its lid, and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes. Uncover the pan and give it a mix. Take a handful of water and sprinkle on top of broccoli and besan flour, this will help besan coat on broccoli easily. Stir fry it for three to four minutes. Sprinkle lemon juice and mix it again. Now it is done.

Switch off the stove. Now your Broccoli Stir Fry is ready for serving. Serve it with rice or chapathi.

My Recipe Notes on Broccoli Besan Sabji:

> Heat 1 litre water with salt. It should not boil. Mix well and add broccoli florets. Set it aside. It helps hidden worms if any to come out of the water. Drain off the water and rinse florets under clear running water. Drain them and set aside, so that excess water dries up.
> When you buy Broccoli, try to get the fresh ones..
> Adjust the spice level according to your tolerance level..
> While taking the ingredients picture, I kept Kashmiri Chilli Powder there and later decided to go for Green chilli as I don’t want this dish turning reddish broccoli. I didn’t use red chilli powder, instead added 2 slit Green Chillies. If you want you can add chilli powder instead of green chillies.
> I didn’t cover and cook this broccoli as I want to retain the green colour of broccoli. Once you cover with the lid, the green colour will get fade. Cooking greens uncovered prevents them from fading its colour.
