It´s Vishu again. Today I am posting Pavakka Pachadi Recipe. Learn how to make it. A very Happy Vishu to all of you. 

Pavakka Pachadi
is a very easy and comfortable side dish for rice in Kerala. Here, the main ingredients are Bitter Gourd, Yogurt / Curd and Coconut. This Pavakka Pachadi is one of the side dishes we make for the feasts in Kerala like Onam and Vishu sadya. It´s a very much wanted side dish for Onam and Vishyu Sadya Recipes.

Bitter gourd has got many medicinal values. It is low in calories and dense in nutrients. It is very good for treating diabetes. Hey, diabetic patients, use Bitter Gourd regular in your diet, due to its hypoglycaemic activity. It is a good option to reduce your sugar level. It helps to overcome stomach disorders too.


Bitter gourd may not be everyone´s favourite,  but you don’t get the bitterness of Bitter Gourd as we use coconut and yogurt. It tastes delicious. It pairs well with hot rice.

There is difference between Pachadi and Kitchadi. In Pachadi vegetables are cooked by adding water and in Kichadi vegetables are fried. Rest everything is the same. You can thinly slice bitter gourd and deep fry it for the Pavakka Kichadi. This will reduce the bitter taste.

Ingredients for Bitter Gourd Pachadi:

Bitter Gourd / Pavakka – 1 medium sized finely chopped
Shallots / Small onions – 5, finely chopped
Green Chilli – 2 slit
Water – ¼ cup
Plain Yogurt / Curd – ½ cup
Salt to taste
Grated Coconut – ½ cup
Cumin Seeds – ¼ tsp. optional
Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp. crushed in a mortar and pestle
Coconut Oil – 1 tbsp.
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp.
Dry Red Chillies – 2
Shallots finely chopped – 1
Curry Leaves – 2 sprigs

How to Make Pavakka Pachadi:

Grind grated Coconut along with Cumin Seeds to a fine paste. Keep it aside.

Cook Bitter Gourd / Pavakka along with Green Chilli, Curry Leaves, Salt and Water over medium heat until the water mostly evaporated. Next add the ground Coconut mixture and the crushed Mustard Seeds and cook for a couple of minutes. Switch off the stove and set aside until warm. Add the Yogurt / Curd to this warm Pachadi and mix well. Do taste check for salt.

Heat Coconut Oil in a small pan over medium heat. Splutter Mustard Seeds. Add the sliced Shallots and sauté it until the shallots turn golden brown. Next add the dried Red Chillies and Curry Leaves. Pour this seasoning over the prepared Pavakka Pachadi. Serve with rice and other side-dishes.

My Recipe Notes on പാവയ്ക്കാ പച്ചടി:

1. Adjust the seasoning as per your taste.
2. Use Coconut oil for getting its authentic taste.
3. To remove or to reduce the bitterness from Bitter Gourd, add salt generously to the chopped bitter gourd and keep it aside for half an hour. It would have oozed out a lot of water. Squeeze out the water well and rise it for a couple of times and then use it.
