French Beans Thoran with split Bengal Gram

The word Thoran is often associated with South India. It’s a very common side dish during lunch and dinner along with rice in South Indian states. The very famous thorans from Kerala are Cabbage thoran, Carrot thoran and Beans thoran.. The list goes endless. This is the recipe of easy and filling Beans and split Bengal gram thoran. Have you heard about ‘Poor Man’s Meat? It is Beans, because it has a great source of protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium. Potassium, Magnesium and iron.

Beans Thoran is my favorite among all thorans and I make it quite often. Reji is a fan of this vegetable and so I always pick up this French Beans from the vegetable section whenever I see it`s so fresh..  I used to buy every now and then without thinking so much about what to cook with that.. In my house beans would turn into either a stir fry or a thoran etc.. My hubby loves it in any form.. Sometimes I make it not by itself, but with potatoes or any lentils or mixing it with carrot or some other veggies.. It’s all your discretion to mix beans with any other item..


Here I mixed Green Beans, also known as French Beans with Split Bengal gram. This gram is produced by removing the outer layer of Kala chana or Bengal Gram. Most dal recipes are quite simple to prepare. The standard preparation begins with boiling a variety of dal (or a mix) in water with some turmeric, salt to taste, and then adding a fried garnish at the end of the cooking process.

Chopping vegetables is a big and time consuming work if you are not using a Vegetable Chopper. Cut beans by clipping its head and tail.. The size and shape you have to decide.. You can cut it either finely or as some big pieces.. This you can supplement with the main course like rice or chapathi..

Try this Beans thoran. I am sure that you will love it. I should say that the end product would be superb.

So, here we go..

Ingredients for French Beans with Bengal Gram:

Beans (chopped to small round pieces) – 250 grams
Split Gram Peas – ¾ th cup
Coconut (grated) – ½ cup
Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp
Green Chillies (slit) – 2 or 3 cloves
Dry Red Chilly – 1 no
Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
Garlic Pods (sliced)– 2 no
Shallots (finely chopped)- 2 no
Oil – 3 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
Urad Dal (split Black Gram)– 1 tsp
Salt – to taste
Curry Leaves – 1 sprig.

How to Make French Beans Thoran:

Chop Beans and keep it aside. Wash Dal well and soak it in water for 2 hours. Drain them. In a blender make them in to a coarse puree and set aside. In a mixer add coconut, cumin, garlic, turmeric powder, green chilly and pulse it one or two times to get a coarse form and keep it aside.

Heat a pan / kadai and add oil in it. Now add the green beans and mix it for 5 minutes till the raw smell goes. Remove it from the pan and keep it aside.

Do the seasoning in the same pan by adding oil. Add mustard seeds when the oil is hot. When Mustard seeds start to crackle, add urad dal, followed by finely chopped shallots, curry leaves and dry red chilly. Saute it till onions become soft. Now add the blended dal, coconut mixture and mix it well till the raw smell goes off. Now add the fried green beans along with salt. Saute them till everything is combined. Close it with its lid and cook on medium low heat for another few minutes. Do the salt check and add if required. Keep stirring until done.

Serve this Beans thoran hot as a side dish with steaming rice or garam garam chapathi.

My Recipe Notes on French Beans Thoran with split Bengal Gram :

> You can make this thoran with frozen beans as well.
> To reduce the cooking time you can steam beans and keep it aside.
> For easy cooking one can add grated coconut directly to the beans.
> If you are in hurry, no need to fry the coconut, instead you can add grated coconut directly to the beans.
> You can mix the coconut by using a mortar and pestle or mix well with hands in order to save time.
> You can replace some green chillies with dry red chillies to reduce the heat / pungent taste.
> Stir the beans dal thoran in between to make sure that it may not stick to the bottom of the pan.
> This thoran is a nice combo with Rice, Fish Fry, Sambar or Moru Kachiyathu..
> You can use any vegetables that keep its shape for the same recipe.
